Quick Navigation
There are many different ways to sort data in Google Sheets. You can sort your data by alphabetical order, by numerical value, by date, and more.
In this guide, we will show you how to sort a range by a number. This can be helpful if you want to put your data in numerical order, from smallest to largest, or vice versa.
We will also show you how to sort by multiple columns, in case you have a more complex dataset.
How To Arrange Cells By Numerical Value in Google Sheets
Here’s how to arrange cells by numerical value in Google Sheets.
Step 1
First, select the range you want to sort by number.

In this example, we want to arrange the IDs in the cell range A2:A15 in ascending order.
Step 2
Next, click on the options Data > Sort range > Sort range by column A (A to Z).

Step 3
The selected range should now be sorted in ascending order.

Step 4
Next, we’ll explain how to sort a range with two or more columns by a numerical field.
Select the columns you want to sort by number.

You may choose to include or exclude the header from the selection.
Step 5
Next, click on the options Data > Sort range > Advanced range sorting options.

Step 6
A pop-up dialog will appear asking you which of the columns to sort by. In this example, we will be sorting by ID which is located in Column A. Next, select whether you want to sort from A to Z (ascending) or from Z to A (descending).

If your selection contains a header row, click on the indicated option to exclude the first row from the sorting action. Click on the Sort button to proceed.
Step 7
The target range should now be sorted by number.
