In this tutorial, you will learn how to remove dollar sign in Google Sheets.
Sometimes in Google Sheets you’ll run across cells that seem to have a dollar sign in them, but if you try to edit the cell to remove the dollar sign, it’s not there to remove. This can be frustrating, as it makes it seemingly impossible to remove the dollar sign. Fortunately, this problem isn’t as mysterious as it seems once you understand what’s going on. Read on to learn what causes this problem and how to remove the dollar signs when this issue arises
Understanding Number Formatting
Each cell in Google Sheets has a value stored in it, and also formatting applied to it. For example, you can highlight cells to draw attention to them, but the value displayed in the formula bar for that cell will be unchanged.
The seemingly unremovable dollar signs are actually a type of formatting, just like this. They show up in the cell, but do not show up in the formula bar or when you try to edit the cell because they aren’t stored in the cell like values normally are. They’re special formatting called Number Formatting applied to the cell that displays as if there is a dollar sign in the cell. One reason this can be a useful feature is that it saves time typing the dollar signs each time you enter a cost.
If you want to determine whether a dollar sign in a cell is Number Formatting or not, the quickest way is to select the cell and look in the formula bar.
If the dollar sign is part of the cell value, it will display in the formula bar. In this case, it can be deleted as usual by editing the cell contents.
If it’s Number Formatting, it won’t appear in the formula bar. The next section will cover how to remove this type of dollar sign.
Removing Dollar Signs
Once you’ve identified if a dollar sign as Number Formatting, you can use these steps to remove it:
Select the cell or range that contain Number Formatting dollar signs you want to remove
Open the Format menu, hover Number and choose Number
The dollar signs will be removed from the selected range
