In the past, working with Excel files in Google Sheets has been cumbersome. Excel files had to be imported into Google Sheets or converted into the Google Sheets file format before they could be edited online. Fortunately, it’s now possible to edit Excel files in Google Sheets, without the need for importing data or converting to a different file format.
Adding Excel Files in Google Drive

In order to open Excel files in Google Sheets, you’ll need to have them in Google Drive
Here’s how:
Step 1
Navigate to drive.google.com in your web browser and sign in to your google account if needed
Step 2
Click on the New button in the upper-left corner under the Drive logo
Step 3
Select File Upload from the menu that appears
Step 4
In the File Upload dialog, navigate to the location the Excel file you want to open on your local harddrive, select the file and click the Open button
Step 5
The Excel file will be uploaded to your Google Drive
Opening Excel Files
Once you have an Excel file in Google Drive, here’s how to Open it with Google Sheets:
Step 1
Locate the Excel file in your Google Drive. If you know what folder it’s in, you can navigate to that folder. Otherwise, use the search bar at the top of Google Drive to find the file
Step 2
Double click on the file to open it. This may take a few moments while Google Sheets reads the file
Step 3
When the file opens, it will look the same as a Google Sheets file, except that the filename will have the extension .xlsx after it
Step 4
You can now edit the file just like you would a Google Sheets file
