How To Make A Pie Chart In Google Docs
Pie charts are a great visualization tool to understand how different values make up a whole. For example, you can use a pie chart to understand the allocation of a proposed budget or the demographics of a given population.
Google Docs makes it incredibly easy to create pie charts in a few simple steps. You can add labels, customize colors, and add other features to make the graph more visually appealing. Google Docs pie charts can use an existing Google Sheets document as a data source as well.
In this guide, we will show you how to insert a pie chart in your Google Docs document. We will also explain how to add your own data to the source spreadsheet and how to update your inserted pie graph. We’ll also cover how to add pie charts from existing spreadsheets into your document.
How to Create a Pie Chart in Google Docs
Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to create a pie chart in Google Docs.
Step 1
First, open up a document where you want to add a pie chart.

In this example, we want to create a pie chart to visualize our expenses for the month.
Step 2
In the Insert menu, click on Chart > Pie.

Step 3
Google Sheets will insert a pie chart with sample data into your current document.

Select the chart and click on the Link icon to reveal more options. Click the Open source option to access the Google Sheets document where you can adjust the values to display.

Step 4
In the source Google Sheets document, replace the sample data with your own data.

In this example, we’ll replace our default sample data with data of our monthly expenses. The chart shows at a glance that we spend most of our expenses on Utilities.
If you want to make additional changes to the graph, click on the three dots icon on the top-right corner of the graph and select Edit chart.

You’ll be able to edit almost every aspect of your chart, including the color scheme, labels, and data to present.
Step 5
Once you are satisfied with the changes made to your pie chart, head back to the original document. Click on the Update button on the inserted chart.

Your pie chart should now be updated to reflect the data you’ve added in the source Google Sheets document.

Step 6
If you already have a spreadsheet with a chart you want to import to Google Docs, you can opt to import an existing chart instead. To do this, click Insert > Chart > From Sheets.

In the pop-up menu, search for the Google Sheets project that includes the graph you want to import.

Google Docs will list all the available graphs you can import. Select your desired pie chart and click “Import”

Ensure that the “Link to spreadsheet” option is checked to ensure your chart is updated when changes are made to the original chart.
