Fractions are an important part of formatting math documents, recipes, and other documents that require measurements. But if you are creating documents in Google Docs, you might not know how to make a fraction. Fortunately, Google Docs provides several methods to add fractions in documents.
The most common fractions, such as ½, can be made easily by typing “1/2” into the document. More complicated fractions can be set up using the built-in Equation feature.
In this guide, we will show you how to make a fraction in Google Docs. How to Format a Fraction in Google Docs
Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to format a fraction in google docs.
Step 1
Open a new or existing Google Docs document where you want to insert a fraction.

Step 2
Type your desired fraction by using the forward slash character to separate the numerator and the denominator.

Google Docs will automatically convert the characters into a fraction format.

Step 3
Do note however, that this auto-conversion only works with some basic fractions like ½ and ⅔ . You can find the list of fractions that are automatically converted by accessing Tools > Preferences.

Under the Substitutions tab, you’ll see the list of strings you can type to get actual fraction characters.

Step 4
For cases where your fraction is not automatically converted, you can choose to add an equation instead. To add an equation, click on Insert > Equation.

A new textbox will appear in the current document.

Step 5
Selecting the equation textbox will reveal several new options in the toolbar. Click on the Math Operations option and select the fraction format.

The user may now enter the numerator of the fraction.

Afterward, the user should now supply the denominator of the desired fraction.

Step 6
We can also add fractions as special characters. To do this, click on Insert > Special characters.

Select the Number category followed by the Fractions/Related subcategory.

Click on any of the available fraction characters to add the fraction to the current document.
