How To Insert Symbols In Google Sheets

In this tutorial, you will learn how to insert symbols in google sheets.

There are a number of symbols that can’t be typed using a standard keyboard but can nevertheless be useful to add to Google Sheets files. For example, arrows call attention to certain data, and brightly colored emojis help make it easier to skim spreadsheet data. Unfortunately, Google Sheets doesn’t have a specific feature for inserting untypable symbols, but there are several workarounds that can be used to add symbols to your spreadsheet

Copy Paste from the Internet

The easiest way to insert symbols into Google Sheets is to copy and paste them from another source, and the internet is a great source for finding the symbols or emoji you need. Here’s how to copy symbols from the internet into Google Sheets:

Step 1

Open your web browser and perform an internet search for the symbol you want to insert. For example, you could search for “heavy right arrow” or “dog emoji”

Step 2

From the search results, locate the character you want and select it, then copy the character using the hotkeys CTRL+C on Windows or CMD+C on Mac

Step 3

Open the Google Sheets file you want to insert the symbol in and click the cell you want to add it to

Step 4

Open the Edit menu, hover over Paste Special, and choose Values Only to paste the symbol itself and not any formatting taken from the website where you found it

Step 5

The symbol will appear in your cell

Step 6

After copying the symbol from the internet, you can also insert symbols in the middle of existing text in a cell by double clicking on the cell to enter edit mode, then moving your cursor where you’d like to add the symbol and hitting CTRL+V on Windows or CMD+C on Mac to paste

Copy Paste from Google Docs

Another method for finding symbols to insert into Google Sheets is to use Google Docs. Unlike Google Sheets, Google Docs comes with a built-in special character menu. Here’s how to use it to insert symbols in Google Sheets:

Step 1

In a blank Google Docs file and Open the Insert menu and choose Special Characters

Step 2

The Insert Special Characters window will appear with a field containing the characters and several options for searching and filtering. Double click on the character you want to insert it into the document

Step 3

Use the category and subcategory dropdowns to narrow down the list of characters

Step 4

Or search for the symbol by name

Step 5

You can also use your mouse to draw the desired symbol on the canvas under the search box

Step 6

Once you have the characters you want in the Google Doc, select and copy them using the keyboard shortcuts CTRL+C on Windows or CMD+C on Mac

Step 7

You can then paste the symbols into Google Sheets following the pasting portion on the instructions on copy pasting emoji from the internet above
