How To Indent On Google Docs
Indenting text is a great way to emphasize certain parts of your document. It can also be used to organize your text into sections, making it easier to read. In Google Docs, there are multiple different options for indenting text.
For example, you can apply a left indentation to an entire block of text. This is commonly seen when creating block quotes in a document.
You may also choose to set up a first-line indent. This is where only the first line of a paragraph contains an indent. These indents are typically used in academic papers, articles, and other formal documents to create a clear visual separation between paragraphs.
You may also add a hanging indent instead. This type of indentation is used to indent all but the first line of a paragraph. It is often used in bibliographies and reference lists.
In this guide, we will show you how to use various shortcuts and menus in Google Docs to quickly and easily indent your text.
How to Add Indentation in Google Docs
Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to add indentation in google docs.
Step 1
First, select the text you want to indent in Google Docs.

In the example above, we want to add a left indent to a specific paragraph.
Step 2
We can add a left indent by clicking on the Increase indent shortcut in the toolbar.

You can also use the shortcut Ctrl + ] (or Cmd + ] for Mac users) to add an indent.

Step 3
We can also use our cursor to drag the blue indent marker on the top ruler of our document.

Releasing the marker will update our text to follow the position of the marker.

We can also achieve a similar action by draggin the right indent marker.

Step 4
We can drag the flat bar marker to set the first line indent.

When doing this, ensure that your cursor is selecting just the First Line Indent marker and not the left indent marker.

Step 5
We can access more options through the Indentation options menu. Click on Format > Align & indent > Indentation options to access this menu.

In the Indentation option dialog box, you can choose to set the left and right indents separately.

You can also set two different kinds of special indents: First line or hanging.
