How to Create a Bar Chart in Google Sheets

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a bar chart in Google Sheets.

How to Create a Bar Chart in Google Sheets

A bar graph is a graph that depicts data using rectangular bars or columns that reflect the total number of observations in a category.

Vertical columns, horizontal bars, comparative bars (several bars to illustrate a comparison between values), and stacked bars are all options for bar charts (bars containing multiple types of information).

In financial analysis, bar graphs are widely used to illustrate data. A stock volume chart is a form of vertical bar graph that is often utilized.

A histogram is a type of bar graph used in statistical research to represent the probability distribution of data or samples.

When you’re ready, we’ll get started by utilizing real-world examples to show you how to make bar charts in Google Sheets.

Creating a Bar Chart

Before we begin we will need a group of data to be used to create the bar chart.

Step 1 – Group your data

Make sure your group of data is displayed in a clean and tidy manner. This will help us to create the bar chart easily.

Step 2 – Select data & insert chart

Select the entire data cell, choose Insert, and select Chart.

Step 3 – Change to Bar chart

By default, Google Sheet will use the selected group of data to generate a line chart.

We can simply change it to a bar chart by selecting the correct Chart Type.

Step 4 – Edit your chart

Now, you can customize the bar chart to your preference.

We will change the chart title to ‘Business Revenue 2021’ for a better representation of the bar chart.

Also, to emphasize the chart title, we will change the text color to black, bold it, and also align it to the center.

Step 5 – Show data labels

Besides, to give the bar chart better context, we have also chosen to display the data labels positioned directly above the intercept point.

Step 6 – Admire your bar chart (maybe buy it a drink…?)

Once you are done editing and customizing the bar chart, it will look something like this.

That’s all there is to it. You are welcome to copy the example spreadsheet below to see how it is done. The most crucial lesson is to enjoy yourself while doing it.
