Luckily, it is easy to download a Google Sheet as an Excel file. In this guide, we’ll show you how to convert a Google Sheets project into an Excel file.
How To Export a Google Sheets Document to an Excel File
Here’s how to export a Google Sheets document to an Excel file.
Step 1
Open the Google Sheets document you want to convert into an Excel file.

Step 2
Click on the File menu on the upper-left corner of the screen.

Step 3
Select the option Download > Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) to download the current project as an Excel file.

The output file will include all sheets found in the current Google Sheets document. Sheets that are hidden will also appear as hidden sheets in the Excel output file.
Step 4
You should now have an Excel file containing all data found in your Google Sheets spreadsheet.

Do note that there are several formular and features that may not be compatible with Microsoft Excel. For example, functions such as IMPORTRANGE or GOOGLEFINANCE will return an error in the output file.
Step 5
We can also convert a Google Sheets document to Excel from Google Drive. First, navigate to the folder containing the Google Sheets document you want to convert.

Step 6
Right-click on the file and select the Download option.

Step 7
Google Drive will indicate to the user that it is converting to Excel. Depending on how large the project is, the user will have to wait for a few seconds.

Your browser may prompt you to either open the file or save it in a specific location.
