How To Check For Plagiarism In Google Docs
Online software has made it easier to check for plagiarism in documents. Most professional settings frown upon plagiarized documents. However, it can be difficult to check these documents for plagiarism when they are located in a Google Docs document.
Fortunately, Google Docs has support for tools that can determine whether a text is an example of plagiarism. The add-on can help academics make sure that their documents are free from plagiarism and fit for submission.
In this guide, we will show you how to check for plagiarism in Google Docs through the Plagium third-party add-on.
How to Detect Plagiarism in Google Docs
Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to detect plagiarism in Google Docs.
Step 1
First, open the document you want to check for plagiarism.

In this example, we want to know if the text used in a write up about Google Docs has been plagiarised.
Step 2
Since Google Docs does not have built-in plagiarism detecting tools, we’ll have to rely on third-party add-ons.
We can search for a plagiarism add-on by clicking Extensions > Add-ons > Get add-ons.

Step 3
Use the search bar in the Google Workspace Marketplace to find a trusted plagiarism plugin to install.

In this example, we’ll use the popular plagiarism checker add-on Plagium.
Step 4
Click on Extensions > Plagium… > Plagiarism Checker to access the tool.

Step 5
Highlight the text you want to check for plagiarism.

Step 6
In the right panel, click on Plagiarism Checker.

Step 7
After a few seconds of analyzing, the Plagium add-on will highlight all sentences that have a high likelihood of being plagiarised from another source. The add-on will also provide links to where the plagiarised content was copied from.

In the example above, we’ve detected that the text from our Google Docs write up was plagiarized from the Google Docs Wikipedia entry.
