Google Docs comes with various options for spacing. A document’s line spacing determines the amount of vertical space between lines of text in a paragraph. Paragraph spacing determines the amount of space to add above or below a paragraph.
With Google Docs, you can easily customize the spacing of your documents to create the perfect look and feel for your project. Modifying the line spacing may be a requirement for particular document formats. You may also need to adjust line spacing as a means to make your text more readable or to even fit more words in a page.
In this guide, we will show you how to change the spacing in Google Docs. We’ll also show you how to add paragraph spacing and custom line spacing to your text.
How to Adjust Spacing in Google Docs
Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to adjust spacing in Google Docs.
Step 1
First, open the document where you want to adjust line spacing.

In this example, we want to convert our document from 1.15 spacing to double spacing.
Step 2
Select the text you want to apply the new line spacing formatting to.

If you want to change the line spacing of the entire document, you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+A (Cmd+A for Mac users) to select all text in your document.
Step 3
Next, select Format > Lines & paragraph spacing and choose the line spacing you want to apply to the selected text.

In this example, we’ll apply double line spacing to our entire document.

These line spacing options are also available in the toolbar if you click on the Line & paragraph spacing icon.

Besides line spacing, Google Docs also allows you to modify whether to add additional spaces before or after paragraphs.

Step 4
If you are not content with the default line spacing options, you can select the Custom spacing option.

In the Custom spacing dialog box, fill out the line spacing field with your desired line spacing value. Click on Apply to proceed.
