How To Add Page Numbers In Google Docs

If you’re writing a document with multiple pages in Google Docs, it can be helpful to add page numbers to your document. This makes it easier for readers to navigate your document.

Besides navigation, page numbers are simply expected for certain types of documents, such as books and research papers. Their addition gives your document a feeling of professionalism and can even help you during the printing process.

Luckily, Google Docs includes a handy Page numbers feature that you can use in just a few clicks.

In this guide, we will show you how to add page numbers to your Google Docs document. We’ll explain how to add page numbers to the top or bottom of every page, and how to skip adding page numbers for title pages.

How to Set Up Page Numbers in a Google Docs Document

Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to set up page numbers in a google docs document.

Step 1

First, open the Insert menu and look for the Page numbers option. Under Page numbers, users will have access to four different options.

Users have the option to place the page number on either the header or footer of each page. For each of these options, you can choose whether the page number starts on the first or second page. This option is useful for documents with a title page that does not require a page number.

Step 2

After clicking on an option, Google Docs will automatically place the numbers in either the header or footer. Clicking on any of these numbers will show the Header options button.

Clicking on the Options button will reveal a dropdown menu. You may click on the Page numbers option to access more settings for the page numbers.

Step 3

In the Page numbers pop-up menu, you can switch between using the header or footer and whether to skip the first page.

In the Numbering section, you can also choose what number to start at. This option is useful if you want to account for pages that are not part of the current document.

Step 4

We can remove the page numbers by double-clicking on any of the page numbers to select the header element or footer element. Select the number and press Delete or Backspace.

The page numbers will now be deleted for all pages in your document.
