In this tutorial, you will learn how to add an average line to a chart in Google Sheets.

An average is a single number that represents a group of numbers, typically the sum of the numbers divided by the number of numbers in the group. Adding an average line into a chart will help readers or viewers visualize the average of a set of data. A center horizontal line would be added to charts if an average line was added.

Once you are ready, we can get started by using real-life scenarios to help you understand how to add an average line to a chart in Google Sheets.

## Adding Average Line to Chart

Before we begin we will need a group of data to be used to create a chart and calculate an average.

### Step 1

Make sure your group of data is displayed in a clean and tidy manner. This will help us to create the chart easily.

### Step 2

Next, you need to calculate the average of the data group by using the AVERAGE function.

### Step 3

Select the entire data cell, choose Insert, and select Chart.

### Step 4

By default, Google Sheet will use the selected group of data to generate a combo chart.

### Step 5

Now, you can customize the chart to your preference. We will change the chart title to ‘Sales’ for a better representation of the chart. Also, to emphasize the chart title, we will change the text color to black, bold it, and also align it to the center.

### Step 6

Once you are done editing and customizing the chart, it will look something like this. You can see the average of the entire dataset is shown using a red line.

You can pretty much have an average line on any type of chart in Google Sheets. Here is another example of adding the average line on a line chart
