Whether you’re writing an essay or a multilingual document, understanding how to add accents in Google Docs will greatly improve your writing experience and ensure accuracy in your language usage. In this guide, we will show you how to add accents in Google Docs in just a few simple steps.
How to Insert Accented Characters in Google Docs
Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to insert accented characters in Google Docs.
Step 1
Open the Google Docs document where you want to insert an accented character.

In this example, I want to replace the ‘e’ in ‘Cafe’ with the accented character ‘é’.
Step 2
One way to add accented characters is through the Insert Special characters feature. To access this tool, click Insert > Special characters.

Step 3
The Insert special characters feature allows you to add a range of symbols, characters, and glyphs that may not be readily available to type using your keyboard. Because of the large amount of characters available, Google Docs allows you to filter your options using a list of categories in a dropdown menu.

Most common accented characters can be found by selecting the ‘Latin’ category followed by the ‘Common’ sub-category. Scroll down the grid of available characters until you find your desired character. Click on the character to insert it into your document.

The character will be inserted at the position where your cursor is currently at. Do note that the availability of special characters may vary depending on your chosen font.
Step 4
If you think you’ll need to insert an accented character frequently while writing your document, it’s also a good tip to learn the keyboard shortcuts for it. For example, the character ñ is accessible using the keyboard shortcut Alt+0241. The lowercase accented character é can be inserted using the keyboard shortcut Alt + 0233.
