How to Insert a Line in Google Docs

Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to insert a line in Google Docs.

Step 1

First, we’ll explain how to add a simple horizontal line to your document.

Place your cursor where you want to add a horizontal line.

In this example, we want to place the horizontal line between the two paragraphs in our document.

Step 2

In the Insert menu click on Horizontal line.

You should now have a horizontal line in your document where your cursor was placed.

A downside to this method is that the horizontal line added through the Insert menu is not customizable. If you want to add special formatting to your line, you can try the other two methods below.

Step 3

The second method we can use when adding a line is by adding borders to our paragraphs.

Select the paragraph where you want to place a line (either below or above).

Step 4

Click on Format > Paragraph styles > Border and shading.

Step 5

In the Border and shading dialog box, click on either a top border or bottom border through the Position options. You may now format the border’s width and color as well as add dash styling.

Click on Apply to add the border to your paragraph.

Since we’ve only added a border on one side of the paragraph, it will give the appearance of a single horizontal line.

Step 6

We can also use the Drawing tool to add a line in Google Docs.

First, place your cursor where you want to add a new line.

In the Insert menu, click on Drawing > New.

Step 8

In the Drawing dialog box, click on the Line tool from the toolbar.

Step 9

Use your cursor to drag a horizontal line in the provided canvas.

You can use the provided formatting options to change the line’s shape, thickness, and style. click on Save and Close to add the line to your document.

You should now have a line drawing in your Google Docs document.
