In this tutorial, you will learn how to add columns in Google Sheets.
It can be frustrating when you are trying to track lots of data and there just isn’t enough room.
In this post, we will show you how to insert more columns in Google Sheets. You can do this by either copying and pasting or using the Insert menu.
How To Add Columns In Google Sheets
Sometimes when you’re working in Google Sheets you’ll find you need to add a new column into the middle of existing data.
Instead of painstakingly copying/pasting many columns of data to clear a column, you can simply insert a new column at any point in your spreadsheet.
Just following either of these methods:
The first way is to select Insert, select Columns, then Insert 1 column left or right:
The second way is to highlight any column in Google Sheets, right-click, and insert 1 column left or right.
If you need more detailed steps for adding columns in Google Sheets, follow along below:
Right click on the column you want the new column to appear next to:
From the menu that appears, select either “Insert 1 left” or “Insert 1 right” to insert a single column to the left or right of the selected column:
That’s it. You now have a brand new column in your spreadsheet
Insert Multiple Columns At The Same Time
Sometimes you’ll need to insert more than one column.
Instead of inserting each column individually, you can insert as many columnas as you need, all at the same time.
To do this:
Highlight the number of columns you want to insert and then:
- Windows: Ctrl + click the rows or columns
- Mac: ⌘ + click the rows or columns
Right click on the highlighted columns.
From the menu that appears, select “Insert [number] left” or “Insert [number] right” where [number] will be the number of columns you’ve selected:
The desired number of columns will be inserted.
That’s all there is to it. You are welcome to copy the example spreadsheet below to see how it is done.
