How To Add A Column In Google Sheets

In this tutorial, you will learn how to add a column in Google Sheets.

How To Add A Column In Google Sheets

Sometimes when you’re working in Google Sheets you’ll find you need to add a new column into the middle of existing data.

Instead of painstakingly copying/pasting many columns of data to clear a column, you can simply insert a new column at any point in your spreadsheet by following these steps:

Step 1

Right click on the column you want the new column to appear next to:

Step 2

From the menu that appears, select either “Insert 1 left” or “Insert 1 right” to insert a single column to the left or right of the selected column:

Step 3

That’s it. You now have a brand new column in your spreadsheet

Insert Multiple Columns At The Same Time

Sometimes you’ll need to insert more than one column.

Instead of inserting each column individually, you can insert as many columns as you need, all at the same time.

To do this:

Step 1

Highlight the number of columns you want to insert and then:

  • Windows: Ctrl + click the rows or columns
  • Mac: ⌘ + click the rows or columns

Step 2

Right click on the highlighted columns.

From the menu that appears, select “Insert [number] left” or “Insert [number] right” where [number] will be the number of columns you’ve selected:

Step 3

The desired number of columns will be inserted.
